نیایش یا دعا شکلی از رفتار دینی است که هدف از آن ، جستن ارتباط با موجودیتی است که فردِ نیایشگر او را به‌عنوان آفریدگار خود یا موجودی روحانی در نظر می‌گیرد. فرد نیایشگر در دعاهای خود معمولاً خواسته‌ای را از مخاطبِ نیایش خود طلب می‌کند یا از مخاطبِ دعا سپاسگزاری می‌کند. دعاها معمولاً با بیان کردن واژه‌هایی به‌صورت شفاهی یا تداعی آن واژه‌ها در ذهن انجام می‌گیرد و در برخی ادیان شکل رایج‌تر آن به‌صورت نیایش‌ سرایی است.

برای دعا آداب و شرایطی از جمله خواندن خدا با اسماء الحسنی ، طلب از پروردگار از سر بیم و امید و از روی تضرع و خشوع ، شروع دعا با بسمله و حمد و صلوات ، ذکر شده است. دعا به زمان و مکان خاصی محدود نشده ولی بعضی از زمان‌ها و برخی از مکان‌ها برای دعا کردن مناسب‌تر معرفی شده است.

دعا وسیله تکامل روح و رسیدن به بهجت معنوی است که کم کم انسان را به عشق حق می رساند و او را چون قطره ای، در دریا محو می کند. اگر در سیره اولیا دقت کنیم و محتوای دعاهای آنان را ببینیم، متوجه می شویم که آنها از خواستن حاجات عادی زندگی ساکتند و زمام کار را به دست خدا داده اند.

سيّد على خان شيرازى در كتاب «كلم طيّب» فرموده است: این دعا ، دعاى استغاثه به امام زمان (صلوات الله عليه) است، هر كجا كه باشى دو ركعت نماز بجاى آر و سپس زير آسمان رو به قبله بايست و بگو:
