El propósito de los primeros auxilios es aliviar el dolor y la ansiedad del herido o enfermo y evitar el agravamiento de su estado. En casos extremos son necesarios para evitar la muerte hasta que se consigue asistencia médica.

Los primeros auxilios varían según las necesidades de la víctima y según los conocimientos del socorrista. Saber lo que no se debe hacer es tan importante como saber qué hacer, porque una medida terapéutica mal aplicada puede producir complicaciones graves. Por ejemplo, en una apendicitis aguda un laxante suave puede poner en peligro la vida del paciente.

The purpose of first aid is to alleviate the pain and anxiety of the wounded or sick and to prevent the aggravation of their condition. In extreme cases they are necessary to avoid death until medical assistance is obtained.

First aid varies according to the needs of the victim and according to the knowledge of the lifeguard. Knowing what not to do is as important as knowing what to do, because a poorly applied therapeutic measure can produce serious complications. For example, in an acute appendicitis a mild laxative can endanger the life of the patient.
